Task Overview

This course has a specific focus on the role of the RN, in terms of effective and safe practice as team leaders, ward/unit managers, change agents and educators.

For this assessment item, groups will be of 3 students from within your tutorial class.

NOTE: This assessment item is in three (3) parts including two (2) sections for Part 1.  Students are required to complete and submit all parts (outlined below) for Assessment item 1 to be complete. 

Part 1: Lesson Plan and Justification (total 55 marks)

  • Section 1: Written Lesson Plan for group presentation (150 words –  20 marks) 
  • Section 2: Individual rationale / justification for Lesson plan (500 words – 35 marks) 

Part 2: Group Presentation (25 marks)

Part 3: Individual peer evaluation of student presentations (20 marks)

Task Details and Criteria

PART 1: Group Lesson plan (Section 1) and Individual Justification (Section 2)

  • Section 1: The Group Lesson Plan provides the opportunity for students to demonstrate their understanding of lesson plans and their skills in developing lesson plans appropriate to context. 
  • Section 2: The written justification is a short academic essay that provides the opportunity for individual students to demonstrate their understanding of lesson plans and their use.

PART 2: Group Presentation (25 marks)

The group presentation provides the student with the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and abilities in educating and engaging learners. 

You, with your group, are required to present the lesson, planned in Part 1, to your tutorial class (Your fellow students in your tutorial class will play the role of your learners).

PART 3: Individual student evaluation of group presentations (20 marks)

This activity provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to objectively and constructively critique peer education presentations.

Task: 

    • You are required to write an evaluation of each group presentation in your class (minimum of five (5)
    • These evaluations are required to be objective and constructive 
    • Use the  Peer Evaluation of Presentation form to document your evaluation (one form for each group presentation you observe)
  • Note: It is expected that all students attend all presentations held in their tutorial class.

Title:  Advantages of assisted living for older adult patients

Context: Encouraging a 68 years old patient to receive nursing assistance to improve her quality of life

Venue: Patient’s home 

Number of Learners/Clients: 1

Learner/Client Characteristics: The patient is 68-year-old with advanced congestive cardiac failure. The patient lives independently in her home with her 50-year-old dentist son. She prefers to do everything by herself and refuses to seek nursing assistance 

Time available: Total 30-45 minutes. Around 5 minutes for introduction, 5-10 minutes for checking the previous learning, 15-20 minutes for role play and explanation, and 5-10 minutes to seek clarification and assess the learning

Aim:

  •   To motivate the patient to receive nursing care
  •   To teach the advantages of assisted living

Learning objectives:

  • Describes the importance of receive nursing care
  • Explains the advantages of assisted living
  • Seeks the assisted living facility

Part II:

Context:  The patient has the right to refuse or accept treatment, care or nursing assistance. It is essential to obtain the patient’s verbal or written consent before providing treatment or performing a procedure (Grady, 2015). In spite of signing informed consent, some patients refuse to receive nursing care or assistance, and the nurse should respect the patient’s decision to protect the patient’s autonomy (Entwistle, Carter, Cribb, &McCaffery, ., 2010).  In this lesson, we will discuss the dilemma faced by the nurses when a patient refuses to receive care or assistance and how a nurse should negotiate with the patient and delegate nursing care to improve the patient’s quality of life.
