Sustainable Tourism Question

Choose one (1) of the following essay topics:

1. In Australia, the political dominance of mining and continued degradation of natural assets in recent years have, and continue to have, negative effects on the tourism and hospitality industry. Referring to key concepts of sustainability thinking (e.g. systems thinking, resilience, diversification, localisation etc.), convincingly argue for the role of tourism as a key economic activity to achieve sustainable development that benefits society, the environment and the economy in the long-term.

2. Whether we like it or not, climate change will dramatically affect our lives and lifestyles into the future, not least because of the increase in extreme events. Tourism is a major contributor to climate change, particularly through its travel/transport component. In this context, critically evaluate whether humanity can continue to sustain tourism as a valid activity in light of climate change. If so, elaborate on how tourism can and needs to evolve in a world with finite resources. If not, explore the implications to society and the economy of tourism no longer occurring. Support your argument with relevant literature and data.

 3. Critically examine the potential of tourism to reduce poverty and improving livelihoods in the context of the current dominant neoliberal environment. Explore ethical considerations, characteristics in the style and type of favourable tourism approaches and draw on international examples and data to illustrate your argument.

 4. People’s connection to and appreciation of nature has dramatically declined in recent decades. Accordingly, protected areas which serve both to conserve nature and to help people appreciate nature are under increasing political pressure. There is, however, increasing recognition of the importance of nature to people’s wellbeing. In this context, critically explore how tourism can positively contribute to nature conservation and support biodiversity while facilitating and growing people’s enjoyment and appreciation of nature. Use examples and data from around the world to illustrate your argument.

 5. The social and cultural dimensions of tourism sustainability have gained increasing attention over recent years in attempts to more equally balance and consider the economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts of tourism. In this context, critically evaluate the potential of tourism as a force for peace. Draw on debates from current literature and illustrate your arguments with examples.

Sustainable Tourism Solution

Sustainability Thinking as Key Economic Alternative
Sustainable development involves conservation and management of the natural resource base and orientation of technological and institutional approaches in a way that ensures that the satisfaction of the human needs is continuously attained for the present generation and for future generations as well (Filho, et al., 2014). System thinking is an essential part of sustainability as a systems approach helps in understanding the complexity of the environment in which they operate as it emphasizes on thinking in terms of context, relationships and connectedness (Young & Dhanda 2012). A System can be defined as the set of interrelated elements, which make a unified whole (Higgins 2014). The ecosystem is one such system, which includes interaction between living things and their non-living environment (Young & Dhanda 2012).

Mining boom created an imbalance in the system as the industry had an increasingly negative impact on tourism as it reduced international leisure tourism due to the high value of the Australian dollar (Pham, et al. 2013). The mining industry attracted and retained labor, which created problems for the tourism industry as people prefer well-paid jobs in the mining industry as compared to the average pay in the tourism sector (Dwyer, et al. 2016). Mining significantly impacted and continues to impact the balance of the ecosystem as it involves digging up and destroying forest and soils and once the coal is used it leaves behind acid mine drainage, other waste elements, which can have a significant negative impact on the environment and health of the people (Dwyer, et al. 2016)………..
