Business Management Solution

Introduction

Leadership is very important when it comes to the successful completion of deadlines and projects that require group efforts. Different leaders have different approaches to deal with a particular task. The leadership style varies from person to person (Bass & Riggio, 2006). A member of the group influences, guides and takes the decision on behalf of others. This influence helps in motivating people to do a particular task(Bass & Riggio, 2006). In this assignment, an attempt has been made to understand the various leadership styles. A psychometric questionnaire is taken based on which I figured out my leadership style as participative. The results and analysis of the same are provided in the appendix. It fits well with my strengths and weaknesses. A few classroom activities were taken by the instructor, who helped me learn more about leadership and its best practices. In addition, I have also listed down a few improvement areas that would help me become a better leader.

Leadership Styles

Leaders use a large number of leadership styles which may include transformational leadership, participative or democratic leadership, servant leadership, authentic leadership, autocratic leadership, etc. The leadership style of a person plays a bigger role as compared to the person himself. This means that any person can become a good leader if he/she knows how to lead people for the betterment of the organization (Caverley, Cunningham, & MacGregor, 2007). In addition, a leader should also try to find out his own strengths and weaknesses in order to adopt an appropriate leadership style. These qualities are known to a person over a span of time. A good way to find out a person’s leadership style is by taking up a psychometric test. It helps in matching the qualities of a person with the preferred leadership style.

In this type of leadership style, the opinion of each person is considered before making a final decision(Bass & Riggio, 2006). When an employee is involved in this, he/she gets a feeling of being respected. In addition, the supervisor also gets a better understanding of the prevailing issues.

One flip side of this leadership style is that in a situation where a quick decision is to be made, the leaders generally falter. For this reason, a person advocating this kind of leadership should encourage team participation but should also be able to take quick decisions as and when required. Servant leadership is the one where the leader is more focussed on servicing the subordinates(Gong, Huang, & Farh, 2009). The leader helps the subordinates to complete their work by being actively involved. Mutual respect is built between them. One downside of this kind of leadership style is that in most cases, the leader is not able to devote equal time to each of the team members. In such a situation, he/she is generally criticized for demonstrating favouritism at work. This, in turn, creates a negative work environment. Third, autocratic leadership is where the leader takes his own judgement calls without referring to the suggestions made by the subordinates (Hogg & Giessner, 2013). Since they have the absolute authority, the group is bound to abide by them. This type of leaders can be too difficult to deal with at times and like to closely monitor each and every employee. This leadership style is not preferable for every individual. Some leaders are good at motivating, and their persona is such that they inspire people around them. The people respect their leader and follow whatever decisions are made by him/her. This kind of setting is essential for autocratic leadership to work. Fourth, transformational leadership is used by the leaders in order to improvise upon the performance of their employees (Efron, 2016). The manager’s prime focus is to change the attitudes of the employees and also to ensure that these changes are in line with the goals and objectives of the company. These leaders have a vision and inspire the whole team to mutually work towards accomplishing it. Many famous people like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates exhibit this kind of leadership style. On the other hand, Transactional leadership is used to set goals for the employees for the purpose of better monitoring and supervising (Caverley, Cunningham, & MacGregor, 2007). The goals are set by the managers, and these should be met by the employees on time. This kind of leadership does not try to impose any new standards or methods, but it tries to improve the efficiency of the set routines and schedules. The corrective actions are only taken when the performance of the team members are not up to the mark to achieve success for the organization (Farine & Couzin, 2015). In normal situations, the things are organized in a fashion that the higher authority interference is least required, and each member does his/her job properly and efficiently. Many research shows that at the lower levels of hierarchy, this kind of leadership is more successful (Caverley, Cunningham, & MacGregor, 2007).
