Nursing Assignment Questions

Question 1 :

In the video the speakers identify a number of factors associated with living in a rural and remote area which contribute to the development of mental health problems for Aboriginal Australians.

One of these factors is poverty. With reference to primary health care principles and practices, discuss the link between poverty and mental health/ illness. Ensure you support your discussion with current nursing and health literature.

Question 2:

Mental health is one of The National Health Priority Areas (NHPAs) chosen by Australian governments for focused attention. The Deadly Thinking workshops target the prevention of mental health problems. One strategy used is teaching participants to recognise the signs that someone in their family or community may be suffering poor social, emotional or mental health. Another strategy involves teaching participants a variety of tools, techniques and 'specific skills to help them work with their own people'.

Identify one (1)or more of these tools, techniques or skills and explain how they can be used to promote mental health and wellbeing.

Question 3:

Participants in the Deadly Thinking workshops arecommunity elders, community leaders and 'natural helpers' – people wanting to raise awareness of and strengthen social and emotional wellbeing of their own communities.

This reflects the primary health care principle of community participation, whereby it is recognised that engagement and empowerment of individuals, families and communities are long term and effective strategies for achieving improvements in health and well-being.

With reference to the video, explain how community participation can be used as a strategy for promoting health and well-being.

Question 4:

The Deadly Thinking workshops are described in the video as 'primary intervention' and thus likely to close the gap and prevent mental health problems arising in the first place. This is another way of saying primary prevention.

Explain the concept of primary prevention and describe the role of education in community-based, primary prevention workshops, such as Deadly Thinking.

Question 5:

In the video the narrator states that the Deadly Thinking workshops are based on 3 fundamental principles or ideals – culture, language and confidentiality. This means that these 3 principles underpinned all the activities that were conducted in the Deadly Thinking workshops as well as the development of the teaching materials that were used in these workshops.

Imagine you are on a clinical placement in a rural community health centre. Your facilitator has asked you to create a poster which conveys these three principles in a culturally sensitive manner. The poster will be used to highlight the importance placed on these 3 principles during the next Deadly Thinking workshop.

The poster may be prepared in any format of your choosing – hand drawn or prepared electronically – but must be able to be converted to a suitable format for uploading to Turnitin

QUESTION 1

Research suggests people who are economically unstable or below the poverty line are more prone to mental health illness as compared to the economically stable counterpart (Rogers and Pilgrim, 2014). [SD1] At times, the reasons for instability on economic front and poverty take a vicious circle pathway. For example- losing a job can lead to economic instability and the situation becomes worse if you are the sole bread earner of the family (Yoshikawa, Aber and Beardslee, 2012). From Primary care point of view, addressing the source of mental health and risk factors is of utmost importance. Both poverty and mental health illness can go hand in hand which poses barrier against successful strategy designing.

With new disease inception and removal of ancestral property led to spiritual and psychological poverty, segregation of communities into reserves and settlements led to economic poverty and marginalization (AIHW, 2014). The NATSISS report of 2008 demonstrated a link between psychological distress and ill health, low income, and low educational attainment, homelessness, dependence on fatty foods due to low cost resulted in a number of psychological and physical problems. Nearly half of the community leaves in such household which cannot raise $2000 per week for any emergency showing financial stress (Garvey, 2008). As parents unable to raise their children in a good living condition get entangled in drug and alcohol, the happiness and wellbeing get disturbed. [SD2]

QUESTION 2

The deadly thinking program has been launched in order to empower the indigenous community to combat mental health issues. A number of tools are facilitated in order to promote mental health wellness and wellbeing of the community. Yarning is one such tool, which was supposed to be used by Natural helpers. Yarning is a term given to a place or network where people speak about distress, stress, low self-esteem, and their thought process during such situation to others and share their feelings.[SD3]  Research shows building strong emotional and social network can improve mental health and significantly reduce risk factors such as depression, suicidal thoughts, emotional disturbances etc. Another tool which can help Aboriginal community members to heal their mental health issues is self – help skills (McMurray & Clendon, 2010).

Similarly, another tool which has been promoted through this program is self-help. Self-help mostly deals with understanding your own mental health issues, knowing the risk factors and analyzing the importance of leaving those risk factors or avoiding for a better life. In most cases, due to poverty aboriginal people undergoes depression and stigmatization of mental health issues keep them isolated. In isolation, they tend to move towards substance abuse and alcohol which further ruins their family from economic aspect and their health from the biophysical aspect.  The self-help tool provides a comprehensive overview of their actions and weighs it against the consequences which can make them realize the hazardous effect of those risk factors.

[SD1]A good start indeed
[SD2]Appropriately concluded
[SD3]Adding a reference here was required
