Derived from the business topic, the proposal needs to include Clearly State research questions (primary and secondary). and provide a solid research methodology that supports the feasibility Of the research project.

Marking criteria of the research proposal include: the justification or the research questions that operationalize the research topic; the demonstration Of detailed research methodology addressing research instrument, sample size and sampling approach, research location’s and schedule as well as providing a critical of the Imitations of the methodology and the expected outcome of the research project.

1. Introduction

In the present modern scenario, computers have become omnipresent. There is an increasing preference for the adoption of ubiquitous media applications. Human beings are surrounded by interactive technology which is characterised by its pervasiveness and lesser interference (Lyytinen & Yoo 2002). Ubiquitous media systems are on the basis that people and their surroundings are enhanced with technology that offers information and services based on their requirement. Though the economic concern is a major inhibitor, it is difficult to evaluate the benefits as the value generated is when the returns are more than the capital investments made for the ubiquitous system implementation (Fleisch & Tellkamp 2003). This project proposal aims to determine the value of ubiquitous media systems for a business organisation. The project objective is defined, and the scope for limiting the boundaries of this research study is stated. A literature review is conducted to recognise the key concepts of ubiquitous media systems. Based on the research opportunities identified, research questions are framed. Both qualitative and quantitative research techniques to be used for data collection are detailed. The limitations of this proposed study and the research plan are specified. The probable research outcome and a brief summary of this proposal are included in the concluding section.

2. Project Objective

It is highly difficult to determine the value created from the ubiquitous computing applications deployed in an organisation (Fleisch & Tellkamp 2003). This is due to various challenges arising from the complex network, technical challenges, implementation issues and restriction in realising the value. This proposed study is intended to determine whether business organisations have realised any value with the implementation of ubiquitous media systems.

3. Project Scope

Among the ubiquitous media applications, the Smart Tag approach using Smart RFID, which is used in automated data capture is the technology selected for this proposal. This research will analyse the value created with the use of a Smart Tag approach by Australian companies in their supply chains. This proposed survey would cover all the stakeholders in a supply chain – manufacturers, distribution centres, warehouses, logistics companies and retailers who have a direct influence with this technology (Potdar, Wu & Chang 2009).

4. Literature Review

Lugmayr (2009) defines ambient media or ‘ubiquitous media’ as media objects which are entangled within the human surroundings and are used to identify the consumerism aspect. A ubiquitous system is designed to capture information pertaining to events, state of human mind, situations, and reasoning based on the input signal and convert into smart output (Ahn et al. 2005). This is further purported by Zhang et al. (2013) and Akesson and Eriksson (2007) that the key objective of ubiquitous computing is to augment information system and devises usage and at the same time maintaining their availability throughout the visible environment and appear invisible to the user. This has a significant impact on different technological areas, such as computer peripherals, network configuration, software, data privacy, and computing algorithms.

The development of a ubiquitous system shows a paradigm shift in which information technology applications have become virtually invisible to human beings (Ma et al. 2005). The objective of ubiquitous media is to construct an intelligent environment that embeds both information technology and communication, which allow users to share media services with no sentience to the underlying technology  (Akesson & Eriksson 2007). Such an intelligent capability of ubiquitous media is mainly achieved through context-awareness, which utilises technology to sense information on a timely basis and adapts to changes according to the context (Zhang et al. 2013).
