Introduction

Culture influences people’s lives in different ways, which include views, desires, values and behavior (Kittler). Culture provides individuals identity and a sense of belonging. The values, which individuals develop and practice represent their culture (Schlosser). Culture can be defined as values, customs and social behavior of a society or a group of people (Schlosser). Many of the behaviors, habits, and practices of an individual are influenced by their cultural backgrounds (Kittler). Fast-food consumption has become a cultural aspect of American society (Schlosser). It is found that the majority of Americans consume more fast food as compared to homemade meals (Kittler). This essay discusses whether the fast-food culture is a boon or bane to Americans from the perspectives of culture and health.

Culture influences the eating habits and behavior of individuals and provides guidelines on acceptable food, eating patterns and behavior and the combination of food (Schlosser). Eating fast food is one such habit developed by the Americans as they have developed the culture of eating snacks, which are quick and easy to prepare as compared to the complete meals (Pirello). In America, more than half of the population spend more on fast food restaurants due to the busy schedules and easy access to fast-food restaurants (Pirello). Americans prefer the food, which is available at a lesser price, conveniently purchased and can be served quickly (Stein). The changes in the lifestyle and market trends have led Americans to opt for food, which is easily and conveniently available (Kittler). Most the people are not focusing on the food they consume as they live a busy life and have access to many fast-food restaurants, which influence the people on daily basis through advertisements and promotions (Kittler). Fast food restaurants have provided Americans the convenience of buying ready to eat and portion-controlled foods (Schlosser). The other factor, which attracts the people to fast food is the low cost and various choices of snacks (Pirello).  

While fast food has become a cultural artifact, fast food consumption has its adverse effects on health too (Schlosser).  Fast food includes most of the products such as pizza and fries, which are not good for health. Most of the fast-food items include increased fat content in the food offered (Kittler). Fast food though has enabled people to have quicker access to food and has been saving people’s time and money it has been leading to major health issues such as obesity, diabetes and many other illnesses, which can incur further expenses for getting health treatments (Schlosser).  Fast food culture developed by Americans is a rising concern as it has made people spend more on eating at the fast-food restaurants as compared to cooking food at home (Pirello). The negative impact of fast food on people’s health is another aspect, which people have to consider while practicing the fast-food culture. Cultural influences thus can have a negative or positive impact on the society or group of people.
