Organizational Diversity – Learning and Development Strategies:

There are a lot of inherent advantages of adopting a multicultural environment in the workplace. The first benefit is the wide range of options available to the organizations when it comes to the allocation of resources or looking for a solution to a particular problem. Employees from diverse cultures have diverse experiences that they can apply while solving problems and this in turn, gives a competitive advantage to the organization (DeLancey, 2013). The second advantage is a wider range of services. Because of the fact that the company has employees who are from various geographies or work backgrounds, the company can penetrate into wider markets. The third benefit is the huge pool of varied ideas that are accumulated from the diverse crowd. The other benefit is related to employee morale. Organizations that create a friendly atmosphere have their employees with high working morale which results in increased efficiency of the organization. Organizational diversity also leads to an increased rate of employee retention (Kreitz, 2007). The clients have a higher level of trust in such organizations owing to the fact that these organizations have less number of litigation charges and lawsuits against them. When organizations are undergoing changes in their business processes to increase efficiency, multicultural diversity can ease the process of change owing to their diverse experiences both culturally and professionally.

Equal Employment Opportunity speaks of non-discrimination by the employers while recruiting a potential candidate on the basis of race, age, color, sex, religion or national origin. To prevent this discrimination, there are a lot of laws in place which ensure that as long as the candidate is qualified for the job, he/she is entitled to the job and he/she cannot be denied the job on the basis of the grounds described above. Countries like the United States have the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission which aims at protecting the employees in the US from discrimination (Jie Shena, 2009) . The first law that came into effect was Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It safeguarded employees from facing discrimination when it came to hiring, firing, promotion, transfer, wage structure, advertising or referrals. Apart from that, there are other acts like the ‘Age Discrimination Act’ which safeguards employees above the age of 40 years, the ‘Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990’ which protects individuals with disabilities, the ‘Genetic Information Non-discrimination Act of 2008’ which protects individuals from discrimination on the basis of family history or some other genetic information. Apart from that, there are certain legislations which forbid discrimination of employees based on their sexuality.
